Chapter 3-4: Analytical/Synthetic Cubism

Analytical Cubism
Analytic Cubism used geometric shapes to openly express a 3D object, after an analysis of the object as a whole, to represent it in 2D on the same plane with multiple viewpoints seen at once.

Synthetic Cubism
Synthetic Cubism used a more abstract construction, using lines, shapes, or collage materials to express the "idea" of a subject on a more flat plane, rather than literally representing it. Often the paintings seem totally abstract until the title is read, at which point the image becomes clear (as in Picasso's The Studio)

Chapter 3 Outline

I made a poster doing a modern emulation of Ludwig Hohlwein's Asian inpired posters. The text mentions Hohlwein's designs often used foreign styles to sell products, reminding the German audience of the country's far colonial reach around the world.
